Studies Showing Chiropractic Boosting the Immune System

Can Chiropractic Treatment Boost the Immune System?

On September 18, 2010, in Chronic Pain & Disease, by Dr. Lester
One of the most important studies was performed by Dr. Ronald Pero, Ph.D., chief of cancer prevention research at New York’s Preventive Medicine Institute and professor medicine at New York University.  It showed the positive effect that chiropractic care can have on the immune system and general health.
Dr. Pero measured the immune systems of people under chiropractic care as compared to those in the general population and those with cancer and other serious diseases.  His initial three-year study was of 107 individuals who had been under chiropractic care for five years or more.  The chiropractic patients were found to have a 200% greater immune competence than those people who had not received chiropractic care, and they had 400% greater immune competence than those people with cancer and other serious diseases.  The immune system superiority of those under chiropractic care did not appear to diminish with age.  Dr. Pero stated:
When applied in a clinical framework, I have never seen a group other than this chiropractic group to experience a 200% increase over the normal patients.  This is why it is so dramatically important.  We have never seen such a positive improvement in a group.

Another study from Patricia Brennan, PH.D., leading a team of researchers, conducted a study that found improved immune response in her test subjects following chiropractic treatment.  The study specifically demonstrated the “phagocytic respiratory burst of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) and monocytes were enhanced in adults that had been adjusted by chiropractors.”

Life Chiropractic University, produced an incredible study from the Sid Williams Research Center in 1994.  The researchers took a group of HIV positive patients and adjusted them over a six-month period.  What they found was that the “patients that were adjusted had a forty-eight percent (46%) increase in the number CD4 cells (an important immune system component).” These measurements were taken at the patients’ independent  medical center, where they were under medical supervision for the condition.  The control group (the patients that were not adjusted) did not demonstrate this dramatic increase in immune function, but actually experienced a 7.69% decrease in CD4 cell counts over the same period.
The immune system is affected by the nerve system through the connections with the endocrine and the autonomic nervous system.  And chiropractic care improves the function of the nerve system through improving the movement of the spinal bones that encase and protect the spinal cord.
Stressful conditions lead to altered measures of immune function, and altered susceptibility to a variety of diseases.  Many stimuli, which primarily act on the central nervous system, can profoundly alter immune responses.  The two routes available to the central nervous system are neuro-endocrine channels and autonomic nerve channels.

The Results of Chiropractic During the Flu Pandemic of 1918:

“[1] In Davenport, Iowa, 50 medical doctors treated 4,953 cases, with 274 deaths.  In the same city, 150 chiropractors including students and faculty of the Palmer School of Chiropractic treated 1,635 cases with only one death.
In the state of Iowa, medical doctors treated 93,590 patients, with 6,116 deaths – a loss of one patient out of  15.  In the same state, excluding Davenport, 4,735 patients were treated by chiropractors with a loss of only 6 cases – a loss of one patient out of every 789.
National figures show that 1, 142 chiropractors treated 46,394 patients for influenza during 1918, with a loss of 54 patients – one out of every 886.
In the same epidemic, New York health authorities (who kept records of flu as a reportable disease) showed that under chiropractic care, only 25 patients died of influenza out of every 10,000 cases; and only 100 patients died of pneumonia out of every 10,000 cases.  This comparison is made more striking when viewed in the following table:
Influenza Cases Death
Under Medical  Care 10,000 950
Under Chiropractic Care 10,000 25
Pneumonia Cases Death
Under Medical Care 10,000 6,400
Under Chiropractic Care 10,000 100
The same epidemic reports show that chiropractors in Oklahoma treated 3,490 cases of influenza with only 7 deaths.  But the best part of this is, in Oklahoma there is a clear record showing that chiropractors were called in 233 cases where medical doctors had cared for the patients, and finally gave them up as lost.  The chiropractors saved all these lost cases but 25.

Medication Linked to Meningitis Deaths May Have Reached 23 States

The potential scope of the meningitis outbreak that has killed at least five people widened dramatically Thursday as health officials warned that hundreds, perhaps thousands, of patients who got steroid back injections in 23 states could be at risk.

UPDATE: October 09, 2012: The number of identified cases has reached 119, with 11 deaths in 10 different states.

UPDATE: October 11, 2012: The number of identified cases has reached 170, with 14 deaths in 11 different states.

UPDATE: October 12, 2012: from MedScape The number of people exposed to potentially contaminated methylprednisolone acetate produced by the New England Compounding Center (NECC) in Framingham, Massachusetts, is closer to 14,000 — not 13,000 — as originally reported on October 8, federal health officials said today.
“These 14,000 patients received the medication as a steroid injection either into the spinal area or into a joint space such as a knee, shoulder or ankle,” said J. Todd Weber, MD, incident manager of the multistate meningitis outbreak at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). More than 12,000 of these people have been contacted to date, he said.
As of today, the CDC said a total of 170 cases (including the 14 deaths) have been reported across 11 states: Florida (7 cases, 2 deaths), Idaho (1 case), Indiana (21 cases, 1 death), Maryland (13 cases, 1 death), Michigan (39 cases, 3 deaths), Minnesota (3 cases), New Jersey (2 cases), North Carolina (2 cases), Ohio (3 cases), Tennessee (49 cases, 6 deaths), and Virginia (30 cases, 1 death).

UPDATE: October 25, 2012: from MedScape There are currently 328 reported cases of fungal infection, with 24 deaths now reported in 18 states. This includes 5 peripheral joint infections.
NEW YORK (AP) — The potential scope of the meningitis outbreak that has killed at least five people widened dramatically Thursday as health officials warned that hundreds, perhaps thousands, of patients who got steroid back injections in 23 states could be at risk.

Clinics and medical centers rushed to contact patients who may have received the apparently fungus-contaminated shots. And the Food and Drug Administration urged doctors not to use any products at all from the Massachusetts pharmacy that supplied the suspect steroid solution.
It is not clear how many patients received tainted injections, or even whether everyone who got one will get sick.
So far, 35 people in six states — Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina and Indiana — have contracted fungal meningitis, and five of them have died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. All had received steroid shots for back pain, a highly common treatment.
This is especially disturbing, because
Steroid Injections Offer Minimal Relief for Lower Back Pain
In an alarming indication the outbreak could get a lot bigger, Massachusetts health officials said the pharmacy involved, the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass., has recalled three lots consisting of a total of 17,676 single-dose vials of the steroid, preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate.
An unknown number of those vials reached 75 clinics and other facilities in 23 states between July and September, federal health officials said. Several hundred of the vials, maybe more, have been returned unused, one Massachusetts official said.
But many other vials were used. At one clinic in Evansville, Ind., more than 500 patients got shots from the suspect lots, officials said. At two clinics in Tennessee, more than 900 patients — perhaps many more — did.
The investigation began about two weeks ago after a case was diagnosed in Tennessee. The time from infection to onset of symptoms is anywhere from a few days to a month, so the number of people stricken could rise.
Investigators this week found contamination in a sealed vial of the steroid at the New England company, according to FDA officials. Tests are under way to determine if it is the same fungus blamed in the outbreak.
The company has shut down operations and said it is working with regulators to identify the source of the infection.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we advise all health care practitioners not to use any product” from the company, said Ilisa Bernstein, director of compliance for the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
Tennessee has by far the most cases with 25, including three deaths. Deaths have also been reported in Virginia and Maryland.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include severe headache, nausea, dizziness and fever.
The type of fungal meningitis involved is not contagious like the more common forms. It is caused by a fungus often found in leaf mold and is treated with high-dose antifungal medications, usually given intravenously in a hospital.
Robert Cherry, 71, a patient who received a steroid shot at a clinic in Berlin, Md., about a month ago, went back Thursday morning after hearing it had received some of the tainted medicine.
“So far, I haven’t had any symptoms … but I just wanted to double check with them,” Cherry said. “They told me to check my temperature and if I have any symptoms, I should report straight to the emergency room, and that’s what I’ll do.”
The New England company is what is known as a compounding pharmacy. These pharmacies custom-mix solutions, creams and other medications in doses or in forms that generally aren’t commercially available.
Other compounding pharmacies have been blamed in recent years for serious and sometimes deadly outbreaks caused by contaminated medicines.
Two people were blinded in Washington, D.C., in 2005. Three died in Virginia in 2006 and three more in Oregon the following year. Twenty-one polo horses died in Florida in 2009. Earlier this year, 33 people in seven states developed fungal eye infections.
Compounding pharmacies are not regulated as closely as drug manufacturers, and their products are not subject to FDA approval.
A national shortage of many drugs has forced doctors to seek custom-made alternatives from compounding pharmacies. The steroid suspected in the outbreak has been in short supply.
Editor’s Comment: The writer of this article fails to ponder the facts…if steriods were in such short supply (HA!) then how did this confounded pharmacy get ahold of them?
The New England company at the center of the outbreak makes dozens of other medical products, state officials said. But neither the company nor health officials would identify them.
The company said in a statement Thursday that despite the FDA warning, “there is no indication of any potential issues with other products.” It called the deaths and illnesses tragic and added: “The thoughts and prayers of everyone employed by NECC are with those who have been affected.”
A 2011 state inspection of the Framingham facility gave the business a clean bill of health.

Associated Press writers Travis Loller in Nashville, Jay Lindsay in Boston, Randall Chase in Wilmington, Del., and AP chief medical writer Marilynn Marchione in Milwaukee contributed to this story.

Backpacks affect our Childrens Spine

FROM:   Work. 2012 (Jan 1);   41 (1):   99—108

Kistner F, Fiebert I, Roach K.

School of Physical Therapy, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Worcester, MA, USA.

Objective:   This study examined the effects of various backpack loads on elementary schoolchildren's posture and postural compensations as demonstrated by a change in forward head position.

Subjects:   A convenience sample of 11 schoolchildren, aged 8-11 years participated.

Methods:   Sagittal digital photographs were taken of each subject standing without a backpack, and then with the loaded backpack before and after walking 6 minutes (6MWT) at free walking speed. This was repeated over three consecutive weeks using backpacks containing randomly assigned weights of 10%, 15%, or 20% body weight (BW) of each respective subject. The craniovertebral angle (CVA) was measured using digitizing software, recorded and analyzed.

Results:   Subjects demonstrated immediate and statistically significant changes in craniovertebral angle (CVA), indicating increased forward head positions upon donning the backpacks containing 15% and 20% body weight. Following the walking of 6 minutes, the CVA demonstrated further statistically significant changes for all backpack loads indicating increased forward head postures. For the 15 & 20% of body weight conditions, more than 50% of the subjects reported discomfort after walking, with the neck as the primary location of reported pain.

Conclusions:   Backpack loads carried by schoolchildren should be limited to 10% body weight due to increased forward head positions and subjective complaints at 15% and 20% body weight loads.

Does your child suffer from ear Infections?

Chronic Ear Infections, Strep Throat, 50% Right Ear Hearing Loss, Adenoiditis and Asthma

Case history: 4 1/2 year old female with chronic ear infections, strep throat, (on and off for 4 years) 50% right ear hearing loss, adenoiditis and asthma. Had been on antibiotics (Ceclor), developed pneumonia, on bronchodilators and anti-inflammatory for asthma. Also given steroids. ENT diagnosed child with enlarged adenoids. Surgery to remove child's adenoids and to put tubes in her ears was scheduled. Chiropractic history: cervical (C2)and thoracic (T3) and right sacroiliac subluxation. Numerous enlarged lymph nodes and muscle spasm. Chiropractic care of 2x/week for 6 weeks scheduled. After 3 or 4 adjustments mother noticed "a changed child, she has life in her body again...acting like a little girl again for the first time in 4 years." After 6 weeks, pediatrician and ENT noticed no sign of ear infection or inflammation, "Her adenoids, which were the worst the ENT has ever seen, were perfectly normal and healthy. Hearing tests revealed no hearing loss. Family told M.D.s 'all medication was stopped 6 weeks ago when chiropractic care started.' Shocked and confused by this answer, the family was told to continue chiropractic care because it had obviously worked.'"

Two Chiropractic Miracles in One Day

Miracle Patient #1 is a 72 year old female with a chief complaint of low back pain. Examination revealed spinal distortions of neck, mid back and lower back. Significant loss of range of motion was noted in both neck and low back with associated muscle spasm and pain upon compression. X-rays demonstrated severe scoliosis curve in low back and moderate degeneration of neck and low back vertebrae.

After ONLY one adjustment to her spine, she stated that she was able to line dance all night long without pain but one her 3rd visit (today) she actually mentioned something intriguing - "Is it weird that I can actually hear better?"

Of course it is possible to hear better. In fact Chiropractic was discovered based on a hearing miracle when D.D. Palmer "cured" a man of his Deafness:
D.D. Palmer was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1845, He moved to the United States when he was 20 years old. He spent the years after the Civil War teaching school, raising bees and selling sweet raspberries in the Iowa and Illinois river towns along the bluffs on either side of the Mississippi River.
In 1885, D.D. became familiar with the work of Paul Caster, a magnetic healer who had some success in Ottumwa. D.D. moved his family to Burlington, near Ottumwa, and learned the techniques of magnetic healing, a common therapy of the time. Two years later, he moved to Davenport and opened the Palmer Cure & Infirmary.
On September 18, 1895, D.D. Palmer was working late in his office when a janitor, Harvey Lillard, began working nearby. A noisy fire engine passed by outside the window and Palmer was surprised to see that Lillard didn’t react at all. He approached the man and tried to strike up a conversation. He soon realized Lillard was deaf.
Patiently, Palmer managed to communicate with the man, and learned that he had normal hearing for most of his life. However, he had been over in a cramped, stooping position, and felt something "pop" in his back. When he stood up, he realized he couldn’t hear.
Palmer deduced that the two events -- the popping in his back and the deafness -- had to be connected.
He ran his hand carefully down Lillard’s spine and felt one of the vertebra was not in its normal position. "I reasoned that if that vertebra was replaced, the man's hearing should be restored," he wrote in his notes afterwards. "With this object in view, a half hour's talk persuaded Mr. Lillard to allow me to replace it. I racked it into position by using the spinous process as a lever, and soon the man could hear as before."

Miracle Patient #2 is a 65 year old male with a chief complaint of px between the shoulder blades. Examination revealed loss of upper back and neck range of motion with associated pain upon joint compression and muscle spasm bilaterally.

Today on his 4th chiropractic visit... EVER - he states "Dr. Clay I have been extra sore lately is that normal and also I have been suffering from indigestion and acid reflex for quite some time but I have noticed since starting treatment here - I have been digesting my food A LOT BETTER!!"

It is normal to have some extra soreness after adjustments - especially so early on in care. Ones body is adapting to many things during chiropractic care: Inflammation from healing, moving/stretching dysfunctional joints/ligaments/muscles and even using muscles that having been working in a long time.
The digestion issue just goes on to show how chiropractic isn't about neck and low back pain...We are about nervous system interference.

The Facts About Fevers

By Claudia Anrig, DC
Anything that suggest the slightest thing is wrong with a child will cause concern in a parent. A fever, for example, is one of the primary reasons parents will call their child's pediatrician. Yet the truth is, what many of us have been told is a "low-grade fever" is a natural body temperature for some children. Much of what parents have believed for years is just not true.
Fever 101: What Parents Need to Know
Simply put, our body's first line of defense when invaded by any microbe, virus or bacteria are cells called microphages; a strong, healthy immune system may be able to eliminate the problem with this first step alone. If these fail to contain the microbe/"bug," then the body creates other pryogens and proteins to try to assist. Once these have been created, the hypothalamus in the brain recognizes there is an invader and raises the body temperature to assist in killing it off.
This elevated temperature will generally be just a couple of degrees, but the hypothalamus determines, based on the number of pryogens and proteins, what will be necessary to eliminate the microbe/bug. If the hypothalamus creates additional biochemicals to try to protect the body, then the temperature rises accordingly.1

Defining a Fever
kid with feverFor all children above the age of 3 months, a fever is actually a good thing.2-3 It's a sign that their immune system is functioning properly. Although many parents will panic when their child has a temperature above 98.6° F (37° C), and this is understandable since many health care providers have called this a "low-grade fever," the reality is that children's temperature may naturally run a little higher than what many consider the norm.
A true low-grade fever is anything between 100° F and 102.2° F (37.8° C and 39° C). This level of fever is beneficial; with most microbes/"bugs" that a child will be exposed to, this fever will assist the body in repelling the invader.2-3
A moderate-grade fever is typically between 102.2° F and 104.5° F (39° C and 40° C). This temperature is still considered beneficial; if a child's body has reached this temperature, it's what's needed to kill whatever bacteria or virus their body is attempting to fight.2-3
A high fever is a fever greater than 104.5° F (40° C). This fever may cause the child some discomfort and result in a bit of crankiness. Generally indicative of a bacterial infection, this fever means that the body is fighting something a little more serious than the common cold. While it will not cause brain damage or any other harm to a child, it is wise to seek assistance from their medical provider.2-3
A serious fever is one that is at or above 108° F (42° C); this fever can be harmful.2-3

Can a Fever Be Dangerous?
Fevers that are caused by the body's immune system are not dangerous, and the hypothalamus will control the body temperature and not allow it to get so high as to cause harm. While it can be frightening to have a child running a moderate to high fever, it is simply their body doing what it was designed to do.
The only body temperature that can actually cause brain damage, despite what many parents believe, is 108° F (42° C), and this body temperature cannot typically be achieved on its own, but requires extreme external environmental temperatures – for instance, if a child is left in a closed car in hot weather.2

What About Fever Reducers?
Since it is a very rare fever that can actually cause any kind of harm to a child, the best response is to let it run its course; most fevers will resolve themselves in 24 to 72 hours. Parents should be aware that fevers will naturally spike a little in the late afternoon and evening, so a slight increase in temperature during these times is not a cause for alarm. A wait-and-watch approach should be recommended, rather than turning to over-the-counter chemicals. As Dr. Perri Klass says, "Too small a dose of an antipyretic (fever medicine) may be ineffective; too much can be toxic." The risks associated with these chemicals far outweigh any potential danger from the fever.4-5
The typical over-the-counter drug is going to contain acetaminophen, which may cause liver damage. Other fever reducers include ibuprofen, which can cause stomach upset, and aspirin has been associated with Reye's syndrome when given to children under the age of 19.4
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend fever-reducing drugs: "Fever is not an illness, rather, it is a symptom of sickness and is usually a positive sign that the body is fighting infection." Even in cases of high temperatures, the AAP says, "Fevers generally do not need to be treated with medication unless your child is uncomfortable or has a history of febrile convulsions. The fever may be important in helping your child fight the infection."6

The Best Response
The best response to a fever below 104.5° F (40° C) for children over the age of 3 years is lots of rest and clear fluids. Since fevers may cause the child to sweat, parents need to be aware that they will lose sodium and water, which must be replaced with proper fluids. (This does not include Gatorade or other sugary sports drinks.)1 Parents should contact the child's health care provider right away if any of the following occur:1
  • A child younger than 3 months is running any grade of fever.
  • A child between 3 months and 3 years has a temperature above 102.2° F (39° C) and appears ill (it should be noted that even teething may cause a slight increase in temperature).
  • A child of any age has a temperature over 104.5° F (40° C).
Additionally, since dehydration is a potential side effect of fever, encourage parents to watch their child for the following: dry mouth, lack of urine or wet diapers for 6-8 hours (or only a small amount of really dark urine), dry skin, lethargy, irritability, fatigue, or with an older child, dizziness. These signs of dehydration may be a concern and the child should be seen by a health care professional, especially if they are unable to keep down clear fluids.
It is important to note that in children under the age of 5 years, a fever can also lead to a seizure, known as a febrile seizure. However, while this can be frightening, it will typically have no lasting effects.5

"Fever Phobia"
In 1980, Dr. Barton Schmitt published a now-classic article in which he coined the phrase "fever phobia." Many parents believed that untreated fevers could actually rise to critical levels and that even low-grade fevers could have serious neurological effects. This is just not true.5
In 2001, Dr. Michael Crocetti, an assistant professor at Johns Hopkins, was the lead author of a study called "Fever Phobia Revisited: Have Parental Misconceptions About Fever Changed in 20 Years?" He found that 20 years later, not much had changed and that despite education, parents still believe that fevers are dangerous. Keep in mind that although they do increase the need for fluids, fevers in and of themselves are not harmful.5
A fever is a natural part of a child's immune response. When it is functioning at its absolute best, a child's body will fight off most foreign invaders so swiftly that they will have no outward effect at all. However, when necessary, a child's immune system will raise their temperature to create a hostile environment for that invader. It's how a properly functioning body functions.
